The Buzz Around Bill: Microsoft Shows New OS

Jonathan Nee NetCompass News Editor

What Does Your Web Traffic Mean?

Someone from Estonia visited our web site? Why is everyone leaving the site from my bio page? What's a Google Bot? Web traffic analysis is an invaluable tool for measuring and improving a web site's success. At first glance your stats may read like U.S. tax code, but we assure you the analysis contains a wealth of information. Site statistics can indicate where your visitors come from, what pages they visit, how often they return, and what phrase or term they entered in a search engine to find you. For example, the Domain summary page of your visitor report tells you a visitor's point of origin. If you are an auto parts manufacturer and your site begins to get a lot of traffic from hyundai.com, it's time to make a sales call. Taking advantage of the precision of our web analytical tools, Total Site is able to follow each individual user's path through a client's web site. In one notable example, we followed a visitor through a client's shopping cart process. The customer filled the cart with a product, then "abandoned" the cart before supplying any payment information. We discovered that the $30 item he was attempting to buy defaulted to overnight air express as a shipping method. The $30 product would have cost $48 to acquire. Needless to say, the default shipping method was changed. Total Site clients' visitor statistics are always available on line at the directory yourdomain.com/stats. Microsoft Unveils New Operating System

Bill Gates was generating a buzz earlier this week. The push behind Microsoft's new XP operating system is reminiscent of the marketing drive that preceded the release of Windows 95. One of Microsoft's top brass claims that XP is not just another system upgrade, it is a lifestyle upgrade. And what will constitute your soon-to-be changed lifestyle? Apparently, integrated consumer electronics. The new OS features audio management and digital video tools, increased mobility and the capacity for remote customer support. In response to criticism that XP's tools bear an uncanny resemblance to those found at Napster or those shipped with digital camera software, Microsoft claimed that because its utilities are native to the system, they are superior and more user-friendly. The XP system is designed to allow various devices and applications share information seamlessly - all part of Microsoft's vision for accessibility from anywhere on any device. The software giant invested over $1 billion in the development of XP, but industry skeptics worry that a decrease in consumer spending might preclude the new Windows product from having any profound effect. The questions remain, can the new operating system boost failing PC sales and a generally sluggish PC industry? And in a slowing economy, will Windows users flock to XP like they did 95? \
